nerves

overview

Major Nerve Source

  • Sciatic Nerve (L4–S3) Largest nerve in the body Travels from lower back → glutes → down the leg Splits into two main branches: Tibial nerveCommon fibular (peroneal) nerve

Posterior Leg (Back of Leg & Foot)

Tibial Nerve

  • Path: Runs down back of leg → behind medial ankle → into foot

  • Function: Plantarflexion (pointing foot) Toe flexion Sensation to bottom of foot

  • Role: Push-off strength, walking, balance

Anterior & Lateral Leg

Common Fibular (Peroneal) Nerve
  • Splits into:

Deep Fibular Nerve
  • Function: Dorsiflexion (lifting foot) Toe extension

  • Role: Prevents foot drop; controls walking mechanics

Superficial Fibular Nerve
  • Function: Foot eversion Sensation to top of foot

  • Role: Lateral stability and balance

Foot Nerves

Medial Plantar Nerve
  • Function: Sensation to medial (inner) foot; controls intrinsic muscles

  • Role: Fine motor control

Lateral Plantar Nerve
  • Function: Supplies lateral foot and intrinsic muscles

  • Role: Foot stability and coordination
